UDSM Important milestones

  • 1961 (25th October 1961)

    The University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) became a college under the University of London. The college started with a single faculty, The Faculty of Law.

  • 1963

    By 1963, it became a constituent college of the University of East Africa.

  • 1964

    The college was relocated from a single building at Lumumba Street, Dar es Salaam to Mwalimu Nyerere Mlimani Campus.

  • 1965

    Faculty of Science was established.

  • 1968

    Faculty of Medicine was established.

  • 1970

    University of Dar es Salaam was established as a full-fledged University hence the University of East Africa was dissolved.

  • 1973

    Faculty of Engineering was established.

  • 1979

    Faculty of Commerce was established.

  • 1984

    Faculty of Agriculture, Forestry and Veterinary Medicine became Sokoine University of Agriculture.

  • 1996

    By 1996, UDSM had grown into an all-round University, offering all the major traditional University disciplines, including Humanities, Social Sciences, Physical and Biological Sciences, Medicine, Agriculture, Commerce and Management, Engineering, Lands and Architectural Studies.

  • 2005

    UDSM established two constituent colleges of education: Dar es Salaam University College of Education (DUCE) and Mkwawa University College of Education (MUCE).

  • 2006

    Muhimbili University College of Health Sciences became Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS). University College of Lands and Architectural Studies became Ardhi University (ARU).

  • 2015

    College of Agriculture and Food Technology (CoAF). School of Health Sciences at Mwalimu Nyerere Mlimani Campus was upgraded to University of Dar es Salaam Mbeya College of Health and Allied Sciences (UDSM-MCHAS).

  • 2020

    The Mineral Resource Institute (MRI) of the Ministry of Minerals became officially integrated into UDSM. Establishment of University of Dar es Salaam School of Economics (UDSE), School of Mines and Geosciences (SoMG), School of Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Technology (SoAF).
