Welcome to the Institute of Kiswahili Studies (IKS), at the University of Dar es Salaam. Historically, this Institute has inherited experience of more than eighty years from the then Inter-territorial Language (Swahili) Committee which was founded in 1930. The Institute, through various programs, targets to ensure that all students get sound knowledge about Kiswahili language and literature in order to be able to compete in the competitive employment market; thus, to be able to provide their contribution to the society in Tanzania and all over the world.

The Institute, through its departments, prepares students in undergraduate and postgraduate levels to become professionals in various areas in linguistics, literature and publishing in Kiswahili. It prepares professionals who can promote and develop the teaching of Kiswahili as a discipline and as a foreign language, translators and interpreters, language and culture experts, experts in media and ICT who will develop Kiswahili in this era of science and technology. So, The Institute of Kiswahili Studies is a hub and centre for preparing experts in various areas related to Kiswahili language in all its spheres and scope.

Furthermore, Institute of Kiswahili Studies, through its research centres, teaches Kiswahili for foreigners, provides translations services and publications including general and specific discipline dictionaries.

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS MAARIFA PHD FELLOWSHIP 2024

MAARIFA (Transformative Knowledge for People, Forests and Climate in Tanzania) is a new research project collaboration of interdisciplinary team (involving the fields of ecology, political ecology, information technologies, political science, geography and anthropology) from the University of Dar es Salaam, University of Dodoma and University of Copenhagen funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark (MFA) through the administration of Danida Fellowship Centre. The project aims to examine the use of digital citizen science technologies on how and to what extent it can facilitate transformative and decolonial knowledge for climate-friendly development in Tanzania. Protection and restoration of forests ecosystems has potential to store carbon, reduce emissions and support human adaptation and resilience. However, forest management in the Global South often relies on knowledge systems inherited from colonial times. This ignores local communities and indigenous peoples as key actors if climate action is to be successful, sustainable and just. Digital citizen science technologies such as smartphones have been proposed as a means to enhance local involvement in knowledge production. But does it bring about actual transformative change in forest-climate initiatives or are they overhyped techno-fixes? Can they contribute to decolonizing climate knowledge production? This project brings together universities and community organizations in Tanzania to critically examine the use of digital citizen science in ongoing forest carbon and resilience initiatives. It investigates how and to what extent digital citizen science can empower citizens and local knowledge systems, and what the implications are for policy and practice. It will examine digital citizen science initiatives in Iringa, Kilosa, Kilwa and Simanjiro districts.

Vacancy Announcement: Financial Administrator

The Department of Geography in collaboration with the University of Cape Town’s Environmental Humanities South (EHS) is implementing a four-year research project namely: Critical Zones Africa, South and East (CzASE). The project is funded by the Science for Africa Foundation (SFA). It brings several other African research institutions including Addis Ababa University, Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR), University of Zimbabwe, Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) of South Africa and University of Leeds (School of Earth and Environment).

The Financial Administrator will provide efficient and effective financial management for the CzASE Project. The Financial Administrator shall report to the Head of the Department of Geography on matters related to day-to-day project operations. 

  1. KEY ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 
  • To manage CzASE finances and financial reporting including collection of receipts for project activities and travel funds;
  • Preparing monthly bank reconciliation statements and proper books of accounts;
  • Preparing financial statements;
  • Preparing payment vouchers on day to day basis;

The University of Dar es Salaam, in collaboration with project partners, hereby announces PhD positions offered under the research project “Himili Pamoja – Gendered Encounters in Climate Change Adaptation”, funded by Danida Fellowship Centre (DFC), Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark (DANIDA). The project is developed and implemented in collaboration between the University of Dar es Salaam (Centre for Climate Change Studies), the State University of Zanzibar (Department of Geography), and
the University of Copenhagen (Department of Public Health). The PhD students will be registered at the University of Dar es Salaam and will have the possibility of taking PhD courses abroad.

Eligibility

The entry requirements consist of:

  • A first class Honours degree or equivalent from an approved university is essential. Anyone not meeting this minimum requirement will not be considered and should not apply
  • Applicants must be under 30 years of age at the time of applying.
  • Good written and spoken English. For those whose first language is not English, evidence of this capacity is required. Applicants should reach at least level 6.5 in the IELTS or 580 /93 for TOEFL. Please check the University website for more information on English language requirements.
  • Applicants must be African nationals domiciled (or permanent residents) in an African country. Preference will be given to scholarship candidates living in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The scholarship

The scholarship includes:

1. Full tuition fee
2. Air fare to and from the United Kingdom and visa
3. Monthly stipend of £950 for 18 months
4. Arrival allowance of £950

The remaining six months for the internship will be funded directly to the successful candidate by the Mo Ibrahim Foundation.
