Overview of University of Dar es Salaam Business School (UDBS)
University of Dar es Salaam Business School (UDBS) is located at the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) main campus, about 13 km from City Centre. UDBS came into existence in 2008 as a result of a transformation of the then Faculty of Commerce and Management which was established in 1979. UDBS is one of the leading institutions in business and management research, teaching and consultancy in the Sub-Saharan region. The performance is due to the strength of its staff in teaching, research and consultancy, plus the breadth and quality of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and extensive training and consultancy programs in business, entrepreneurship and management.
The UDBS manages four teaching and research departments, which are Accounting, Finance, General Management and Marketing. Also, the School has two service bureaus; the Career Counselling and Alumni Centre, Placement and Practical Training Bureau and Management Development and Consultancy Bureau, a unit that offers consultancy services to the community. Furthermore, there are coordination units within the Dean’s office, these are; Research and Publication, planning and finance, undergraduate studies, postgraduate studies, gender, marketing, and quality assurance. There are research and studies centres operating within the departments, namely; Centre of Policy Research and Advocacy, Centre for Tourism Research, Centre for Banking and Financial Services, a Research Centre for Oil and Gas Business, the Centre for Logistics, and Korean Studies centre
Message from the Dean
The University of Dar es Salaam Business School (UDBS) prepares graduates for what they will actually practice in the real world – i.e. solving complex problems and offering solutions. UDBS organizes its curricula around real-world business challenges in order to develop creativity and problem-solving capacities in our students. UDBS seeks to produce graduates who are more entrepreneurial and job creators rather than job seekers.
We offer Undergraduate and Postgraduate (Masters and PhD) training in Commerce with concentration options including Accounting, Banking and Finance, Human Resource Management and Tourism Management; Business Administration, International Business and Trade, Logistics and Transport, Tourism Management, Entrepreneurship, etc. Technology has and will continue to play an increasingly important role in our academic programmes. UDBS is committed to integrating ICT in business education in order to prepare students for life in the 21st century.
We also aim to strengthen our collaboration with the Alumni network, to openly share practical business experiences and perspectives. The network maintains business and personal relationships to support each other with new opportunities. Furthermore, we appreciate our links with the industry because of the resulting opportunities in experiential learning and consultancy for students and staff. We believe these partnerships support real-time curriculum adaption to reflect the issues that enterprises are facing and increase employment opportunities.
The School’s research and teaching draw upon entrepreneurship, innovation and creativity, sustainability, governance and business management that stimulate development and economic growth. Overall, our mission is to provide quality training, research and advisory services.
Dr. Patrick Mbwile.
