Former Vice Chancellors

Welcome to the University of Dar es Salaam

I am delighted to invite students, researchers, academicians, and other interested stakeholders to the University of Dar es Salaam and its various campuses. We have more than 35,000 students, of whom 5,000 are postgraduates and 300 are international. Our research programmes range across all disciplines - be it agriculture, education, humanities, engineering, health, sociology, economics, and law. The university is keeping very close to a wide range of interests within Tanzania and internationally to ensure the relevance of our academic programmes and the continued excellence of teaching, research, and public service.

The University of Dar es Salaam is a unique community of students and staff dedicated to bringing out the best in all its members. Our aim is to provide the best possible environment for teaching, learning, research, and public services, and our track record of success is well known in East Africa, Africa, and the rest of the world. Since its establishment, the University has been at the forefront in nurturing leaders of the country and the African region. We will continue to ensure that our students’ years at this University will be filled with excitement and treasured experiences. We also recognize that the quality of student experiences derives from more than academic study.

Our mission is to advance the economic, social, and technological development of Tanzania and beyond through excellent teaching and learning, research, and knowledge exchange. We are committed to creating a conducive environment that makes it increasingly relevant to national and global development. We are also at the interface of national and international higher education innovations and initiatives, especially in linking the University with the national socio-economic development goals.

We encourage students to join and actively participate in activities of the Students’ Union and use the various sports and recreational facilities available, including a swimming pool, cricket, athletics, soccer fields, bird watching, and a multifunctional gym. Also, there are several shopping, dining, health, and standard accommodation facilities on the campus and in the vicinity. These will enable students, staff, and visitors to realize their full potential in university life, deriving hope, confidence, and satisfaction; hence motivated to become agents of change to build a prosperous society in Tanzania, Africa, and the world at large.

We are not only proud of the uncountable relationships we have with the international community, industries, and research organizations, but we also take pride in our current students and alumni, and we believe that every new student supplements our legacy of academic distinction.

For our students, I strongly encourage you to focus on your studies. You have a responsibility to ensure the maintenance of the environment, the learning infrastructure, and all the premises. You are welcome to contact my office at any time if you have anything that calls for my attention.

We look forward to welcoming you at the University of Dar es Salaam.
