Structural and Construction Engineering

Introduction

The Department of Structural and Construction Engineering (SCE) was established in July 2009 after merging the former Department of Structural Engineering and the Department of Construction Technology and Management under the then Faculty of Civil Engineering and the Built Environment (CEBE) in the College of Engineering and Technology (CoET), the first campus college of the University of Dar es Salaam.

SCE is involved in education and advanced training of engineers in the field of design, analysis, technology and management of civil engineering structures such as low and high-rise buildings, bridges, towers, underground structures, silos, fluid tanks and others. The Department also conducts applied research and development in building materials, design, analysis, construction technology and management of structures and public procurement. The department provides professional services to the construction industry, government and other organizations.

Physical facilities

The Department has Structures and Building Materials laboratory, which is equipped with several machines for testing of various construction materials. These include machines for testing quality and strength of building materials. In addition, the laboratory possesses other machines for appraisal of existing structures. The equipment is used mainly for teaching purposes, but also made available for professional services to the construction industry.
