UDSM Research Agenda

The University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) has formulated a comprehensive research agenda to guide its research activities from 2018/19 to 2027/28. This agenda is structured to address key societal challenges and support Tanzania’s transition to an industrial economy through strategic development in various research areas. It emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration, rigorous data collection methods, and ethical research practices to ensure impactful research outcomes.

The agenda highlights the importance of research ethics, focusing on intellectual property rights, honesty, environmental protection, and capacity building. The ultimate goal is to conduct research that directly contributes to societal improvement, policy formulation, and scientific advancement. This agenda sets a clear path for UDSM to contribute to national and global development through targeted and impactful research.

Below are our Key Clusters and Research Areas.

Science, Technology, And Innovation (STI), ICT, And Industrial Development

Focuses on enhancing productivity and industrial development through improved technology. This ncludes areas such as commercialization of agricultural products, new and emerging technologies, and innovations.

Education, Agriculture, Food Security, And Health

Aims to transform education and agriculture to improve food security and health outcomes. Research areas include educational access, health interventions, and technological optimization in agriculture.

Governance, Industrial Policy, And Cleaner Production

Investigates the relationship between governance, industrial development, and environmental conservation. Key areas include mining and conservation, alternative energy sources, and effects of policies on natural resources.

Gender, Professional Development, Policy Development, And Policy Implementation

Enhances research on gender equality, professional development, and effective policy implementation. The research focuses on gender mainstreaming, educational transformation, and the application of ICT in various sectors.

History, Culture, Language, Heritage, And Sustainable Tourism

Utilizes cultural heritage and natural resources to boost tourism and national identity. This includes research on sustainable tourism, cultural heritage preservation, and the role of Kiswahili.

Natural Resources and Environment

Addresses sustainable exploitation of natural resources and environmental conservation. The research areas include climate change impacts, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable livelihoods.

Law And Integrated National Development

Examines legal frameworks and their impact on national development. Key areas include human rights, governance, intellectual property rights, and regional integration.
