Confucius Institute Scholarship

For the purpose of cultivating qualified Chinese language teachers and facilitating the promotion of Chinese language and culture, the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) launched “Confucius Institute Scholarship” (CIS) to support outstanding students, scholars, and currently employed Chinese language teachers recommended by Confucius Institutes, independently operated Confucius classrooms as well as some HSK test centres (hereinafter to be collectively referred to as “recommending institutions”) to study in Chinese universities and colleges (hereinafter referred to as “host institutions”).

Acting as one of the recommending institutions, Confucius Institute at the University of Dar es Salaam invites CIS applications from qualified candidates to apply for the CIS programme at our hosting institution Zhejiang Normal University in China.

Zhejiang Normal University was founded in 1956, in Zhejiang Province, an economically developed coastal area. It is one of the key provincial universities and China’s top universities, specializing in teacher education with multiple branches/fields of learning. The main campus is located in Jinhua, a national historical and cultural city in the middle of Zhejiang, and near the world’s biggest trading market Yiwu. It has convenient transportation, about 300 kilometres from Shanghai, and 90 minutes away by high-speed rail. The University insists on running the school openly. It has established cooperation and communication relationships with more than 140 institutions of higher education in more than 50 countries and areas. Up to now, five Confucius Institutes have been established, respectively, in America, Ukraine, Cameroon, Mozambique, and Tanzania. Now, the university has over 2,000 international students from more than 100 countries in the world.

l  ELIGIBILITY

All applicants shall be:

a) Non-Chinese citizens.

b) In good physical and mental condition, having well performed both academically and in behaviour.

c) Aspired to take future careers on the teaching or international promotion of Chinese language.

d) Between the ages of 16 to 35 by September 1st in each application year. Applicants currently working as Chinese language teachers shall not exceed the age limit of 45, while undergraduate students shall not exceed the age limit of 25.

II SCHOLARSHIPS AND QUALIFICATIONS FOR APPLICANTS

A. The Master’s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL) Scholarship

This commenced in September 2018 and provides a scholarship for a maximum of two academic years.  Applicants shall be Bachelor’s degree holders and shall have a minimum score of 210 on the HSK Test (Level 5) as well as a 60 on the HSKK test (Intermediate Level). Applicants who can provide a notarized document of the employment agreement or related proofs upon completing study in China are preferred.

B. The Bachelor’s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (BTCSOL) Scholarship

This scholarship commenced in September 2018 and provides a scholarship for a maximum of four academic years. Applicants must have graduated with a high school diploma, and have a minimum score of 210 on the HSK Test (Level 4) as well as a 60 on the HSKK test (Intermediate Level).

C. The One-Academic-Year Study Scholarship

This commenced in September 2018 and provides a scholarship for a maximum of 11 months. International students currently studying in China are not eligible.

i.  A TCSOL

Applicants shall have a minimum score of 270 on the HSK test (Level 3). However, HSKK test scores are not required.

ii. Chinese Language and Literature, Chinese History, and Chinese Philosophy

Applicants shall have a minimum score of 180 on the HSK test (Level 4) and a 60 on the HSKK test (intermediate level).

iii. Chinese Language Study

Applicants shall have a minimum score of 180 on the HSK test (Level 3).

D. The One-Semester Study Scholarship

This was initially planned to commence in either September 2018 or March 2019 and was meant to provide a scholarship for a maximum of 5 months. Applicants holding visas X1 or X2 are not eligible.

i. TCSOL, Chinese Language and Literature, Chinese History and Chinese Philosophy

Applicants shall have a minimum score of 210 on the HSK test (Level 3). The HSKK test scores are not required.

E. The Four-Week Study Scholarship

This was scheduled to commence in either July or December of 2018 and was meant to provide a four-week scholarship. Applicants holding visas X1 or X2 are not eligible.

  1. Chinese Language plus home-stay experience in a Chinese Family

HSK test scores are required. Organized and applied for by a Confucius Institute with 10-15 participants per group. Prior to the trip, a detailed study plan shall be made after consultations with host institutions and submitted to Hanban for approval.

ii. Special Four-week Programme for Confucius Institutes

The HSK test scores are required. This is organised and applied for by a Confucius Institute with 10-15 participants per group.

III APPLICATION DEADLINES

a)  April 20th (for those commencing in July)

b)  June 1st (for those commencing in September)

c)  September 20th (for those commencing in December)

d)  December 20th (for those commencing in March)

IV SCHOLARSHIP COVERAGE AND CRITERIA

The Confucius Institute Scholarship provides full coverage on tuition fees, accommodation fees, living allowance (four-week study students are excluded), and comprehensive medical insurance expenses.

Monthly allowances for the undergraduates, the one-academic-year study students, and the one-semester students is 2,500 CNY per person. For MTCSOL students, the monthly allowance is 3,000 CNY per person.

V APPLICATION PROCEDURES

1. The online registration is made available from March 1, each year through the Confucius Institute Scholarship website (http://cis.chinese.cn). Please log on to find recommending institutions and host institutions. Submit application documents online, track the application progress, and get feedback on the review and admission results. Scholarship winners shall confirm with the host institutions to go through the procedures of studying in China and print out the CIS certificate online. The scholarship is valid upon registration. Please register at host institutions at the designated date and time.

2. Entrusted by Hanban, Confucius Institute at the University of Dar es Salaam is working as a recommending institution to engage in the applicant selection, materials review, host institutions connection, and collecting and handing over applicants’ documents to host institutions.

3. The host institution (Zhejiang Normal University) will review the eligibility of applicants and submit the admission list to Hanban.

4. Hanban will complete the scholarship review and notify the results two months before the enrolment of the admitted students.

5. After confirming with the successful applicants, host institutions will post the “Letter of Admission”, “Visa Application Form for Foreigners to Study in China” (JW202 Form), and other relevant documents. A copy of the scholarship certificate can be printed out from the CIS website.

VI APPLICATION DOCUMENTS

Applicants should log in into the Scholarship website, fill out the “Confucius Institute Scholarship Application Form”, and attach the electronic files of the following materials:

I. For all applicants

1. A scanned copy of the bio page of your passport.

Applicants under the age of 18 shall provide certified documents of designation signed by their entrusted legal guardians in China.

2. A scanned copy of score reports of the HSK, and HSKK (within the two-year validity).

3. A Recommendation letter by the head of the recommending institution.

Applicants currently working as Chinese language teachers shall provide proof of employment as well as a reference letter from their employing institution.

II. For degree scholarship programme applicants

4. A certification of the highest education diploma (or proof of expected graduation) and an official transcript.

5. Applicants of the Scholarship for MTCSOL Students are required to provide two (2) reference letters from professors or associate professors. Those who can provide a notarized employment agreement with teaching institutions are preferred.

III. Application documents required by ZNU

6. A study plan

7. Photocopy of the Foreigner Physical Examination Form (printed by Chinese quarantine authority) filled in English. Incomplete records or those without the signature of the attending physician, the official stamp of the hospital, or a sealed photograph of the applicants are invalid.

VII. CHINESE BRIDGE AWARD RECIPIENT POLICIES

Chinese Bridge winners who have been awarded the 2018 “Confucius Institute Scholarship Certificate” shall log in into the scholarship website and submit documents to relevant host institutions upon presentation of their CIS certificates. Please contact chinesebridge@hanban.org for inquiries.

VIII. Disclaimer

  1. Incomplete or unqualified applications will not be processed.
  2. Applicants will be disqualified from the application process in case of fraudulent application materials or when application materials are completed and submitted by someone else.
  3. Scholarship winners who cannot register with the host institutions on time should inform the host institution about the reasons in written form within 15 days before the admission date. For those who do not register as requested without reason, the scholarship will be cancelled.
  4. The scholarship will be cancelled for those who do not pass the admission physical examination, drop out, or take schooling suspension during the study.

Appendix 1

Confucius Institute Scholarship Coverage and Criteria
The Confucius Institute Scholarship provides full coverage on tuition fees, accommodation fees, living allowance (four-week study students are excluded), and comprehensive medical insurance expenses.

  1. Tuition fees are under the overall planning and utilization of host institutions to provide teaching and management of scholarship students, organizing cultural and social activities, as well as organizing Chinese language proficiency tests. The tuition fee does not cover the textbook expenses and tourist tickets.
  2. Accommodation fees are under the overall planning and utilization of host institutions to provide students with in-campus apartments (usually double rooms). Students may also live off-campus upon application and getting permission from the host institution. Students who live off-campus are entitled to an accommodation allowance of 700 CNY per person/month, paid on a monthly/quarterly basis from the host institutions.
  3. Living allowance is granted by host institutions on a monthly basis. The monthly allowance for the undergraduates, the one-academic-year study students, and the one-semester students is 2,500 CNY per person. For MTCSOL students, the monthly allowance is 3,000 CNY per person.

Students are required to complete enrolment procedures for every semester within a stipulated period; otherwise, their scholarship may be cancelled. Students who are enrolled before the 15th (or on the 15th) of the designated month, are entitled to the full allowance of that month while those enrolled after the 15th of that month are only entitled to half of the amount.

During the study period, for any student who is absent from China due to personal reasons for more than 15 days (excluding winter and summer holidays), the allowance during absence will be suspended.

For students who suspend study or drop out of school for personal reasons, or who are given disciplinary punishment by the host institutions, their allowances will be terminated on the date of such suspension, dropping out, or when the decision of such punishment is announced.

The living allowance for the month of graduation will be granted half a month after the date of graduation or expiration day of the study confirmed by host institutions.

Comprehensive medical insurance is purchased by the host institutions in accordance with relevant regulations of studying in China stipulated by the Ministry of Education in China. The insurance fee per person is 160 CNY for four-week study students, 400 CNY for one-semester students, and 800 CNY per year for students engaged in programmes longer than one academic year.
