The University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) has made a powerful start at the 2024 Sports Federation of Public Organizations, Institutions and Private Companies in Tanzania (SHIMMUTA) Games in Tanga City, setting the pace and demonstrating exceptional sportsmanship in both football and netball.

The games, which unite teams from various public and private institutions across Tanzania and commenced on 10 November 2024, have seen UDSM secure impressive wins in both men's and women’s sports categories.

UDSM’s football team took charge in their match against the College of Business Education (CBE), finishing with a decisive 3-0 victory, thanks to two goals by Idrisa Mkala and one by Zuvu Kitenge.

This win was preceded by their triumph over Ardhi University (ARU) with a 1-0 win, marking a flawless start to the tournament. Such back-to-back victories have positioned UDSM as an early favorite, showcasing their determination to uphold the university's honour on the field.

The UDSM Women’s Netball Team has also made waves, celebrating three consecutive victories against Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute (JKCI), the Institute of Rural Development Planning (IRDP), and CBE. These wins have solidified their place as a competitive force in the tournament, raising hopes for a continued winning streak.

While the Football and Netball teams have already tasted success, other UDSM teams are preparing for their upcoming matches. Basketball, Volleyball, and an array of traditional games, including tug-of-war, Sack Race, Darts, Cards, and Pool Table, are set to begin soon across various venues in Tanga, promising more opportunities for UDSM to shine.

The Director of Social Services, Prof. Mwajuma Vuzo, expressed optimism about the UDSM team performance in the games in Tanga. “We are well-prepared not just for the victory but also to enrich our minds and health while proudly raising the UDSM flag”.

Meanwhile, as the games progress, UDSM Sports Coordinator Mr. Noel Benjamin Kiunsi noted that this year’s SHIMMUTA competition is particularly fierce, with increased teams and heightened competition. Yet, he emphasized the UDSM team’s commitment to representing the university with pride and determination, encouraging each player to give their best to secure UDSM’s spot at the top.

“These are challenging games; but we are ready to fight for UDSM’s reputation and make it through the group stages as group leaders; our teams know what is at stake and are motivated to keep pushing forward and bring pride to the university while inspiring other institutions to aim higher”, said Mr. Kiunsi.

A tribute to nurse Judith Tarimo, a pillar of support

Speaking after the recent victories, UDSM Sports Coordinator Mr. Noel Benjamin Kiunsi, also the head of the UDSM delegation in Tanga, shared a heartfelt message, dedicating the team’s early success to the late Ms. Judith Tarimo, a beloved UDSM nurse who passed away on 8th November 2024.

Known for her unwavering support and commitment to UDSM’s sports teams, Ms Tarimo had often travelled with the varsity teams, providing crucial first-aid services during competitions.

“We are dedicating this victory as a tribute to the Late Ms. Judith Tarimo, whose dedication and care touched each of us deeply. Her absence is felt keenly; but her memory is pushing us forward with even greater purpose”, remarked Mr. Kiunsi.
